DC can get extremely hot and crowded in the summer months. Millions flock to the capital city from all over the world. Knowing these 5 things will help you avoid the crowds and the heat and make your trip incredibly enjoyable.

1.) Stay in a B&B or vacation rental. For the price of a hotel room you can rent or stay in a home. I have found great homes on the following sites:

2.) Ride the public rental bikes instead of walk. Riding a bike is cooler then walking. The area around the capitol is flat making riding very easy. The cars are good about sharing the road and there are strategically placed bike lanes throughout the city. This video will explain how the bike rental works.

3.) Touring the city at night is a great way to avoid the heat and the crowds. DC is beautiful at night. Every monument and tourist attraction is lit up.

4.) Walk before noon. Walking in the early afternoon late morning is best. The Eastern Market area is a good walking spot. If you are staying in a vacation home it gives you the option of shopping at Eastern Market and preparing simple meals at home for lunch.

5.) Lastly, the best way to beat the crowds and the heat in DC is to ride bikes at night through the mall. This ride, after 8pm is spectacular! You can see many of the attractions in the cool of the night with no crowds or cars.

So, don’t let the heat or the crowds of summer stand in the way of your trip to DC. Enjoy!
